WKA British Championshps 2008

March saw us achieve another set of great results Luke Burks brought home the Gold with a commanding display in his light continuous category. Georgia Shaw also achieved Gold with her fantastic Musical forms display.  Super Jay Spain won two Silvers in continuous and points fighting. Also giving a fine display on his WKA debut was James Renwick who came back with a bronze , but only narrowly missed out on getting to the final.  Next time.

WAKO British Championshps 2008

This weekend (Feb 16th / 17th Feb) saw us achieve another set of great results although some of our stars had some bad luck with the judging. Stuart Philips brought home the Gold in a very tough and competitive Mens under 81kg Full contact section.  After winning two very tough 2 round fights, Stu then showed grit and stamina not to mention blinding hand speed to win the 3 round final. His performance led the very respected coach and former world champion Stuart Lawson to say he should be winning a world title in the near future. Especially magnanimous as Stu had beaten one of his fighters in the process.

3 times British Champion Jay Spain competed in the girls over 65kg section and was extremely unlucky not to come away with the Gold again. Judging these fights can be subjective and we have to accept the judges decisions even though we thought Jay had clearly won the Final. To show just what a champ Jay is she went back on Sunday to do the Points competition and came away from the weekend with two Silver medals.

Another impressive performance came from Liam Willetts who looked to have clearly won his Semi final. Surprisingly to everyone watching; the scores went the other way. Liam's fortunate opponent then went into the final and won a narrow decision. Liam can feel a lot of pride with his bronze medal knowing that with a bit of luck he would have been Champion. Keep up the good work Liam, you soon will be.

7 times British Champion Mark Long achieved some great results to get into the final of the mens under 89kg Light continuous category. On a better day he would have come away with the Gold. Nevertheless it took a European champion to outscore him. Two former British Champions in Luke Burks and Charlie Foster-Vigors both went out to very unfortunate judging decisions.  These things can happen and with their quality we know they will soon be back to title winning ways.  Coming in a few weeks is the WKA British Championships where all our fighters will be looking to achieve more great results.

WKA World Championships 2007

We had six fighters representing England at this year's World Championships. The competition was held in Karlsruhe, Germany from 24th August until 2nd September. In the Adults section our Chief Instructor Craig Long and Gary Kelly and in the junior section Luke Burks, Jay Spain, Macaulay Catterson and Georgia Shaw.

Although we didn't come away with results we hoped for, all our fighters gained some useful experience competing a World level,  representing their country. Most notable achievement was Luke's World Bronze. However Luke was a bit disappointed as he felt he had done enough in the semi-final to beat his German opponent, who then went on to win the World title. If you don't put the result beyond all doubt then home advantage can often play a part. Taking positives from it Luke knows for sure he will become a World Champion in the near future. All our fighters can be proud to have qualified for the event, and none of them were out of their depth.

Spring 2007  WKA and WAKO British Championships

By the time we came to fill this one in, a lot of time had passed and no one remembered much in the way of details.

Craig won the WKA British Title again. His sixth title of one sort or another. Luke Burks retained the WAKO British title that he won last year and also got a WKA Silver medal. Super Jay Spain (we have to call her super now), retained her WKA from last year and also won the WAKO British title. Georgia Shaw and Macaulay Catterson won WAKO silver medals. While Gary Kelly gained silver, very narrowly missing out on the gold in the WKAs. That's all I can piece together, so if anyone remembers anything else, let me know.

15th of July 2006  New Mills Cheshire

We only had four fighters for this event, but still managed to take a coach load of rowdy but very welcome supporters on the day. First up was Carly fighting full contact, and what a fight. Carly's opponent had more experience and made it count early on. By the last round Carly looked to be pulling it back a bit. It was a close result and Carly could take a lot of pride from her performance. Next up was Paul Graham doing a 3 round full contact boxing match. It was clearly a close match, but many felt PG was robbed as he landed the cleaner shots. Next up was Gary Kelly who yet again combined power and style to win in impressive fashion. Last up was Craig who was fighting light continuous. Despite his bigger opponent's use of excessive force, Craig quickly showed his talent throwing shots from all angles, even landing some spectacular spinning hook kicks. Needless to say another great win.

Loads of great results on the night. Well done to all our winners. Again YMAA won the lion's share of the fights. Only unlucky loser was Henry after breaking his arm. Winners included Mark Long doing 2 rounds of showing off, Paul Graham  winning 3 rounds light continuous, Gary Kelly in spectacular form also doing 3 rounds LC.

31st of July 2005  Leeds Open

Another good day at the office. Craig won Gold medals in both the points fighting and light continuous categories. Gary Kelly won Gold in continuous, while Paul had to settle for the Silver. Gary also took Silver in the points. In the Junior section we saw another excellent display from Luke Burks winning continuous Gold and Silver in points. Chris Rushworth took a fine Gold against a bigger opponent, and if not for a punctured tyre going to the venue,  we almost certainly would have seen his brothers Reece Rushworth and Joe Porter matching his achievement. Also putting in truly fine displays were Harvey Devanney, Leah Winn, and Cara Sandford.

Friday 3rd September 2004

Night of Combat, Wakefield

YMAA fighters achieved virtually a clean sweep of wins. Notable wins included the usual masterly display from Mark Long who totally overwhelmed his opponent despite giving away a great deal of weight. Another came from Stuart Philips who obliterated his opponent, despite his 6ft 5" opponent having an obvious reach advantage.  Topping the bill was a 5 round Full Contact contest which Paul Graham convincingly dominated throughout. Earlier in the evening many of our novice fighters also represented the club and with only one contentious exception all came away with wins.
